Sea Shells in the Mountains

Year 2 and LB1 have been following the adventures of Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle. This week Mr Darwin experienced a volcanic eruption, an earthquake and a tidal wave (all a true story!) before venturing high up into the Andes Mountains where he discovered fossilised seashells.

We then looked at some fossils, including ammonites, coral and seashells before having a go at trying to work out what a dinosaur may have looked like from just its bones. 2MG also had time to produce some beautiful ammonite watercolour paintings.

Temperature Change

We’ve been learning how to read a thermometer this week as we measured the temperature of hot water as it cooled. We then plotted our results on a time graph. Most of us hadn’t used this type of graph before but we soon got the hang of it.

LB1’s exciting week

This week we celebrated Chinese new year.  We watched some beautiful Chinese dancers.  They danced a fan dance and an umbrella dance.

We tried Tai Chi with 1SH in the hall.

We made Chinese lanterns and dragon masks.

We also tried Chinese food including;- noodles, rice, spring rolls and rice crackers.

We were given a red envelope to take home with us, with a special treat inside.

Freddie and Alex brought in ornaments from different countries for show and tell.

Christmas message

On behalf of the staff and governors at Lickey Hills Primary School and Nursery, I wish you all a very merry Christmas break and look forward to welcoming you back to LHPSN on Tuesday 8th January 2019. Very best seasonal wishes, Miss Salisbury

A Sound Judgement

Last week, LB2 conducted a sound survey of the whole school. We measured noise levels across the school, in classrooms, the playground and in offices. Afterwards, we discussed whether this was actually a fair test and realised that it depended on what activity was taking place – Reception’s fun phonics lesson was definitely louder than Year 3’s writing assessment! This week we turned our data  into bar charts.

Good Vibrations

LB2 have started their new science topic, “Super Sound”, by exploring how sound is made by objects vibrating. We watched beads jumping on drums, tuning forks flicking water into the air and slow motion videos of musical instruments to reveal the vibrations. We then used an oscilloscope app to display the sound waves produced by lots of different (and very noisy) instruments.

Show and Tell in LB1

Every week in LB1, on a Friday, the children bring in a toy, picture, book or photo from home to share with the  children.  The children love this time, on a  Friday afternoon, where we discuss what they have brought in, why and then ask questions about it.

We have enjoyed show and tell sessions on;-

Holidays, favourite toys, books and autumn.

The mystery of the old, large keys…

Some old and rather large keys appeared in our classroom this morning… Mrs Jones set us the task of asking questions about them using What?, Where? , Who?, When?, Why? and How?

Tomorrow we will be using our imagination to take us through the door that each key opens…and we wonder where that will be and what it’ll be like on the other side of the door!

Year 3 Yoga

3HC and LB children have really enjoyed yoga already and it has helped them mentally adapt to the great transition from year 2 to year 3. Also, it is helping them enhance their flexibility,  strength and coordination.

Looking at the Weather

LB1 have been looking at the weather throughout the year and today we made bar graphs to show how the temperature changed throughout the year. We found that December was the coldest but, unsurprisingly, the last few months have been much hotter.
