Birmingham 10k – Dreamed, Believed, Achieved!

Birmingham 10K – Dreamed, Believed, Achieved! A huge congratulations to everyone who ran the Birmingham 10k on Sunday on behalf of Ward 15 Birmingham Children’s Hospital for our own inspirational Oli Portman. Despite the heat and other challenges (hose pipes, forgotten trainers and a big hill at the end) everyone crossed the line and celebrated in style. Many thanks to Mrs Brooks (5SB) for organising and encouraging the staff runners. The Just Giving Page is now at a fantastic £2,515. many thanks to everyone who supported and donated. The page remains open for any further donations.

Summer Term Parent Workshops

Invitation to our Summer Term Parent Workshops

• Reading and Phonics (Thursday 26th April from 2-3pm)
• Writing: spelling, punctuation and grammar (Thursday 3rd May from 2- 3pm)
• Maths (Thursday 10th May from 2-3pm)

*Parents of pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) – Wednesday 2nd May from 6pm there will be a SEN workshop evening to update you on our school’s progress with SEN provision and what you can expect as a parent.

These sessions are repeats of the ones we have shared in the autumn and spring term however you are welcome to join us again as there are updates to share with you.

Why should you attend?
Here’s some feedback from parents who have attended…

I’m am aware that parental engagement in a child’s education is crucial for helping them to do well at school. The workshops have taught me how to do this and I’m already seeing the benefits!

I understand better how the children learn to read now so I can support my daughter when she gets stuck on a word and I know the strategies she has to work it out by herself.

Maths is taught so differently now (certainly for the better!)

The workshop has definitely helped me to understand this and I’ve certainly noticed I can help my daughter to engage with her maths homework more enthusiastically.

I wish I’d been to the workshops earlier in my child's time at Lickey!

I love the school’s ethos that ‘everyone can do maths’ and will make sure my kids never hear me say ‘I’m not good at Maths again’. I don’t want to put them off or make them think it’s beyond them.

They love the new maths books!

There’s a lot of parenting classes when you have a new baby, but nothing for when they start school.

These workshops have definitely helped me to navigate the next part of my child’s journey.

I look forward to welcoming you to our summer term workshops.

500 Word LHPSN Writer Winners

Over half term the children were tasked with entering the BBC 500 word competition.

We were lucky enough to have many amazing entries from the children at Lickey Hills.

Although the main competition winners will not be crowned for a short while, the winners of our internal competition have been decided by the teaching staff.

Due to the supreme quality of the entrants it was a very difficult decision and in the end we could not decide between George Ferran (5SR) and Cordelia Seeds (4AB) so we have made them joint winners.

Congratulations to both of them and thank you to everyone who took part and hopefully we will have even more entries next year.

LHPSN Just Giving Page for Birmingham Children’s Hospital

A team of staff, family and friends are running (or walking!) to support the family of one of our children who is being treated for leukemia at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Click here to go to our fundraising page.

Oliver Portman, age 9, was diagnosed in January 2018 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Type T. 7 weeks later following a major stroke, brain bleeds, several surgeries, including brain surgery, and chemotherapy, Oli is still smiling. He’s a real fighter! The staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital have been amazing throughout, supporting Oliver and his wonderful family. The staff and Oli’s friends at LHPSN want to help repay their kindness by raising much needed funds for BCH Ward 15.

We welcome any donation, however small, which will go directly to Ward 15. Please give generously and come and cheer us on when we run on May 6th in the Birmingham 10K run. At Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, we believe there’s always more we can do for our sick kids and that’s why we will always strive to do more for our patients and families. It’s our mission to raise the vital funds needed to make a real difference to all who use our hospital.Your support empowers us to take innovative approaches to treating some of the sickest children in the UK. Your fundraising enables us to make our hospital feel just like home. Your donations are helping us to find new ways to treat and cure childhood diseases.

School Closure

The school will be closed on Friday 2nd March due to adverse weather conditions forecast overnight. Parent mail is experiencing difficulties so please share this message widely. This decision is not taken lightly, but I feel for the safety of our pupils, families and staff this is the right decision.
Kind regards,
Miss Salisbury

Fabulous Fundraising for Oliver

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated cakes of all shapes and sizes for the cake and bun sale on Friday 16th February. The children’s cancer ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital will be delighted to receive an amazing £450 from the families of Lickey Hills Primary School and Nursery. Oliver and the Portman family pass on their grateful thanks to everyone involved. With special thanks to Mrs Barros D’Sa and Mrs Boeckx for their super organisation and effort.

500 Words Reminder – LHPSN loves Writing

Entrants need to write an original story on any subject or theme in 500 Words or fewer. If they win, their story will be read live on the radio by a superstar celebrity…like Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Jeremy Irons, or Sherlock himself – Benedict Cumberbatch. Each year, 10 million Radio 2 listeners hear, read and love these stories. Alongside the main competition, we will also be running an internal competition at school to celebrate the entries from our children. The top 3, as judged by the staff, will receive a prize at school. However, I cannot promise celebrities like the main competition! The deadline for the entries to be submitted is the 22nd February, which is on the Thursday of half-term. Submissions must be electronic. Mr Brewer has set up a school submission account so he can submit the entries for the children in addition to them having time in half-term to produce their piece. When the writing is finished and word processed, please email the document to 500words@lickeyhills.worcs.sch.uk.

Amazing Assemblies

Thank you to 6MT and 4LH for getting everyone off to a super start this term with their class assemblies. 6MT shared their Macbeth mash up sharing their acting skills and 4LH took us back in time to the Roman invasion of Britannia. We look forward to 3LE and 5SR coming soon.

We ho-ho-hope you have a very Happy Christmas holiday
