Exploring Number Bonds

In Year One we have  learnt about Number Bonds  this week. We have enjoyed playing games where we had to find pairs that made 10 and we used numicon to investigate number bonds. Some of us thought about addition and subtraction number sentences.

Magnet Magic

Year 1 have been investigating magnets, finding it which materials will stick to a magnet. We were quite surprised to find that not all metals do stick. We also explored how magnets attract to each but can also push away if they are facing the same ends. Finally, we looked at how a magnet could make a paper clip magnetic so that it could then stick to another paper clip. Magic!

Using our Ten Frames

This week we are learning about comparing numbers.

Today we used our ten frames to compare objects and say which has more and which has less.

Measuring Mass

This week in Maths we have learnt about mass.

We found things which were heavy, light and as heavy as each other. We used cubes to estimate and measure the mass of objects.

Maths Week in Year One

This week we have been celebrating Maths Week by completing Maths Trails and opening our own shops!

Looking at Leaves

Year 1 have been looking at leaves. We started by focusing on colour by going on a scavenger hunt for different shades of green on the school field. We soon found out that the grass, tree leaves and other plants on the field used a wide range of greens which we had fun creating names for, such as Bleen (a sort of bluey-green) and Barnt Green (describing a buttercup leaf).

We then returned to the classroom to look at leaf shapes and details such as veins by sketching some of our leaves.
